David M. Geer is an award-winning artist originally from Unadilla, NY, a small town just west of the Catskills and about halfway between Binghamton and Cooperstown. He began drawing as soon as he could hold a pencil, and started selling his pictures to classmates for a quarter a piece in grade school. He began formal instruction in oil painting at the age of twelve and went on to a Bachelor of Arts degree at Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA. He minored in art history and philosophy.
David has exhibited throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic as well as in national exhibitions, winning numerous awards. Solo exhibitions have included Nezuntoz Cafe, Binghamton, NY; The Coffee and Tea Room, Williamsport, PA; Black Bear Winery, Chenango Forks, NY; Remington Gallery, Ilion, NY and The Ninth Life Gallery, St. Thomas, USVI among many others. He has won awards at the Jericho Art Show, Bainbridge, NY; Williamsport-Lycoming Regional, Williamsport, PA; Keuka Lake Art Association, Hammondsport, NY; Norwich Fine Arts Guild, Norwich, NY; Best in Shows from the Otsego County, Delaware County, and Steuben County fairs; and many more.
Every summer David exhibits his work at outdoor art festivals from Lake Erie to the Berkshires. David began his career exhibiting in the student category at the Keuka Lake Art Association Art in Park in Hammondsport, NY and has continued to exhibit there every year for well over a decade.
David was an artist-in-residence at Platte Clove in the Catskills in the summer of 2006. His residency began less than two weeks after his hometown flooded and his studio filled with three feet of water. The residency served as a much needed respite, despite the sprained ankle and wrist he recieved suffering for this art (a hiking injury from the trail down to Plattekill Falls, which can be seen in his painting Secret Falls).
He enjoys sharing his talent and has taught painting to everyone from eight year old students to eighty years old grandmothers. He has offered public and private classes in several media, and was priviledge to teach a talented group of students from an alternative school in Binghamton. The students had a reception at their high school with parents, faculty and fellow students and David counts this as his most cherished teaching experience.
Frequently David incorporates his love of travel into his work. He has painted the chateaux of France, the Grand Canal in Venice, St. Charles Bridge in Prague, the lighthouses of the Maine coast, the squares of Savannah, the adobe of Taos, and the Rocky Mountains to name just a few subjects. He extensively photographs his travels and the results serve as reference for the paintings.
David also is very active in donating his work to organizations to help them raise money. He has donated to the American Heart Association, American Legion and the American Legion Child Welfare Fund, The Northeast Regional Rotary Convention, Public TV Art Auctions, Southern Tier AIDS Program, and numerous small local organizations. His donations have help to raise well in excess of $15000.
David cuurently resides in Endicott, NY with his wife Sarah, their cats Sprinkles and Sebastian and their female beagle Taylor.
Artist Statement
"I create paintings that focus on emotional realism. I use quality of light and color choices to bring out moods, emotions or memories of a particular subject. My work emphasizes the interconnection of light and shadow and the way colors affect the human mind. I believe in subjects and work that adds to the common store of human emotions focusing on the gentle, quiet, mediative, nostalgic, wistful, content or lonely -- the subtleties of the human experience and the small moments that are so often passed by in our fast paced world. I want people who see my work to slow down; to experience the light of a late summer afternoon, to smell the roses in the garden or to be taken back to the snow fields of their childhood."
About The Art Den
The art den and the fox logo derive from my family nickname, Fox. My brother, incidentally, is Panda. A den of course is a fox's home. The idea of a den implies a refuge or a haven that can be used for safety, seclusion, or relaxation. That is how I view my studio: as a comfortable retreat. I hope visitors both to our website and who see my work will have a similar feeling -- a feeling of comfort and relaxation.
